During the week, Cheri Tomassi holds a conservative, high profile job as a vice president of the Boston Chamber of Commerce. During the weekend, she is a member of the Rhode Island Renegades Precision Jump Skydiving Team. She and her cohorts parachute into baseball stadiums and Cheri forges relationships with a current baseball player, the highly regarded but greatly disliked general manager of the Boston Red Sox, and a warm and colorful retired Major Leaguer / Hall of Famer.
In the process of all of this, Cheri enters into a relationship – part romance and then only friendship - with Ty Limone, the general manager of the Red Sox. She finds that he is married – happily or perhaps not – and that he seems to be overly fixated on her, sending her a diamond bracelet after their first night together. Puck Smith, a retired Major Leaguer and Hall of Famer who is well known and deeply loved by New Englanders, becomes a “fast friend” to Cheri and is a funny if somewhat dense ally. In between skydiving and her professional employment, Cheri has a brief romance with Jonnie Lamont, a baseball player who is many years her junior. Worst of all, Cheri’s personal relationships and activities keep getting written up in “Bits and Pieces,” the Boston Herald’s gossip column, and she believes she is being followed though she’s not sure by whom. Is Ty Limone having her followed? Is he feeding info to Boston Bits and Pieces?
Cheri and the Renegades skydive into stadiums and make their way around Boston, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and the greater New England area. Cheri gets hit by a car in downtown Boston. She finds an angry ex-girlfriend in Ty Limone’s past. She becomes an ally of Ty Limone’s wife. The Boston Chamber of Commerce hosts the Red Sox Luncheon. Cheri attends a Red Sox game at Yankees Stadium. Cheri’s friend teaches self-defense to members of the Boston Celtics, one of whom was stabbed in a Boston nightclub and is now fearful of the public. The Renegades perform precision jumps into several different baseball stadiums. The story culminates with the Renegades jumping into Fenway Park. They waylay Ty Limone into skydiving with them, making for a surprised – and surprising – guest of honor.
The story ends 18 months later with Cheri and Ty visiting a famous Boston jewelry store to purchase an engagement ring with a large stone. The question is…who is the impending bride-to-be?
