Immigrants are detained in prisons across the United States without the right to bail or court appointed counsel. More than 200,000 people sit in jail for months or even years waiting for their cases to be resolved. They include long-term residents with a minor criminal offense; asylum seekers fleeing war, political and religious persecution; and undocumented workers. Since 1996 more than 1.6 million immigrants have been deported.
