-’The Purpose of Christmas’

By Dr. D | December 23, 2008

Ornament effect - I've been tagged

(Picture by Road Fun via Flickr)

Pastor Rick Warren has been in the news lately as Barrack Obama’s controversial choice to say a prayer at the inaugural.

Here’s an excellent article written by Warren on the real meaning of Christmas. It’s actually an excerpt from his recent book:  The Purpose of Christmas–a timely message posted in Christianity Today Magazine online:

“Christmas is a party. Specifically, it’s a birthday party — for Jesus — and birthdays are meant to be celebrated. It’s why we say “Merry Christmas!”

Ironically, at most Christmas parties the person whose birthday we’re supposed to be celebrating is completely ignored. He’s never even mentioned. Although Jesus is the reason for the season, he’s often overlooked or merely mentioned along with Rudolph, Frosty the Snowman, Santa Claus, the Grinch, elves, and a long list of celebrated fictional characters.

As I was writing this little book, I decided to take a survey of Christmas shoppers. I asked, “What are you celebrating this Christmas?” Most answers had nothing to do with Jesus:

  • “I’m celebrating that I made it through another year.”
  • “I’m celebrating being home with my family.”
  • “I got a Christmas bonus.”
  • “My son is home from Iraq.”
  • “The candidate I voted for got elected.”
  • “I’m celebrating that I’ve finished all my shopping.”
  • “I’m not celebrating anything. I’m just trying to survive.”

Preparing for Christmas can be a lot of work, especially for moms. With the pressure of buying gifts, sending greeting cards, decorating our homes, putting up lights, cooking, attending parties, and cleaning up afterward, we have little time to actually enjoy the meaning of Christmas.

The first purpose of Christmas is celebration! We learn this from the angel’s opening statement to the shepherds of Bethlehem. God had wonderful news for us that would cause us all to rejoice, celebrate, and throw a party: “I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.” Luke 2:10 (NIV)

The good news of Christmas is worth celebrating for three reasons. It is personal: “I bring YOU.” It is positive: “GOOD news of great joy.” And it is universal: “for ALL the people.” It doesn’t matter who you are, what you’ve done, where you’ve been, or where you’re headed — this news is for you.”  <<Read the complete article>>            *Top

-Apostle Paul was a Fake and a Spy?

By Dr. D | December 6, 2008

International Spy Museum

(Picture of Spy Museum via Wikipedia)

LEXINGTON, Va.: - The head of the history department at Virginia Military Institute suggests that the Apostle Paul faked his conversion and was really a spy for the Romans.

Col. Rose Mary Sheldon of VMI, presented her thesis last week at the International Spy Museum in Washington DC. It was based upon research that she did as co-author of “Operation Messiah: St. Paul, Roman Intelligence and the Birth of Christianity“.

According to her theory, Paul faked his conversion on the road to Damascus so he could infiltrate Christian congregations and report to Rome on the suspicious new group. She notes that Paul’s interaction with Roman officials was remarkably friendly, and that in his letter to the Romans, he urges Christians to obey the authorities.

Response: This comes from the ‘head’ of the VMI history department?  Wow, VMI has a storied and respected past but this research does nothing for its current credibility.

Col. Sheldon may know something about the history and procedures of spying, but is woefully ignorant about New Testament scholarship and the writings of Paul. She will not be able to find even one NT scholar or student who will agree with her theories.  They are crack-pot to say the least.

One major hole in the theory is in the timing of it all. When Paul went to Jerusalem following his conversion he was not well received by the Christian community–In fact, the Apostles sent him packing. After that, Paul spent 9 years making tents for a living in Tarsus before Barnabus brought him to Antioch and another couple of years before he was recognized and sent with Barnabus on their first missionary trip.

Nine years is a very long time, a fake would have gone back to his old job with the Sanhedrin or teaching in the Temple–lots better for a scholar than making tents.

Also, a fake would never be able to write Romans, I Corinthians, Galatians, or any of the genuine Pauline corpus. These writings are part of the very foundation of the Christian religion and loaded with genuine theological teaching, and innovation that continues to inspire Christian scholars 1,900+ years later.

One of his earliest writings totally contradicts Roman thought and culture which divided the world between Roman citizens and slaves. Paul writes in Galatians 3:26–28:

“There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

That one passage ended up being the basis for transforming all of Western culture and society. It was contrary to the traditions and thinking of the Jewish culture that Paul was raised in and was in definite opposition to the 1st century Roman world view. So much for 007 Paul. Anyway you shake it or stir it– it makes no sense.            *Top

-Bob Jones U. Apologizes for Past Racial Policies

By Dr. D | November 28, 2008

Front Campus Fountain, Bob Jones University

(Picture of Bob Jones University via Wikipedia)

A week ago (Fri Nov. 21, 2008), Bob Jones University officially apologized for past racial policies. Until 2000, the university prohibited interracial dating on the campus, plus the school didn’t even admit black students until 1971.

The fundamentalist Christian university which was founded in 1927 in South Carolina issued a statement, the following is part of it:

“We failed to accurately represent the Lord and to fulfill the commandment to love others as ourselves. For these failures we are profoundly sorry. Though no known antagonism toward minorities or expressions of racism on a personal level have ever been tolerated on our campus, we allowed institutional policies to remain in place that were racially hurtful.”

The university officials are bringing up the past hoping to put it all to bed once and for all. On the Internet, Bob Jones U. is still linked with racism in spite of policy changes and the school continues to receive questions about its views on race.

Response: Bob Jones U. has been in the middle of a number of controversies over the years.

During the 1950’s and 60’s, Bob Jones Sr, the university president became involved in a dispute with Billy Graham, accusing him of fostering heretical teaching and criticizing him for cooperating with Catholics and liberal churches in his campaigns. When Graham held a series of meetings near by, students were not allowed to attend.

The University exclusively allows the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible in its services and classrooms, but does not hold that it has the same authority as the original Hebrew and Greek manuscripts. While other English versions of the Bible are criticized, the university is not part of the King-James-Only Movement.

The University has been known to be particularly critical of Catholicism, Mormonism, and main-line ‘liberal’ protestant churches, teaching and publishing material in opposition to those movements.

It is racial policies that have brought the greatest controversy and worst PR to the university. The school did not admit black students until 1971, but continued to ban interracial dating until it became an issue in the midst of the presidential election of 2000. For a long time the school held that their policies were ‘Biblically based’ but now admits that there is really no Biblical justification for their past racial views.           *Top

-A Great Day to be Thankful!

By Dr. D | November 27, 2008

As we gather together with friends and family for Thanksgiving in America, let us remember the blessings that God has bestowed upon this nation and the ultimate gift to be thankful for–His Son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit that graces our lives.

In the midst of economic trouble we do need to remember that our worst times are better than the best of fortune for 95% of the folks living on this planet. Even in times of personal difficulty we can always be confident in the love and the strength of the Lord–we can always depend on him.

It is a great time to remember how the Lord has truly blessed each one of us and our family.

Thank you Father for your Love for us, thank you Lord Jesus for your strength, and Holy Spirit for your peace. In Jesus Name Amen.          *Top

Obama, Ahmadinejab, and a Shia Apocalyptic Scenario?

By Dr. D | November 18, 2008

TEHRAN, IRAN - APRIL 04: President Mahmoud Ahm...

Image by Getty Images via Daylife

Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejab has been talking about an apocalyptic Shia/Islamic scenario for several years now–predicting that ‘the Hidden Imam‘ would soon return as the end-time Mahdi that establishes Islamic rule over the entire world.

Following the election of Barack Obama, some Shities actually believe that Obama could be a possible fulfillment of an end-time Islamic prophecy.

I found the link to this at SmartChristian.com and in an article by Daniel Pipes. Here is a quote from the original article

by Amir Taheri:

According to the tradition, Imam Ali Ibn Abi-Talib (the prophet’s cousin and son-in-law) prophesied that at the End of Times and just before the return of the Mahdi, the Ultimate Saviour, a “tall black man will assume the reins of government in the West.” Commanding “the strongest army on earth,” the new ruler in the West will carry “a clear sign” from the third imam, whose name was Hussein Ibn Ali. The tradition concludes: “Shiites should have no doubt that he is with us.”

In a curious coincidence Obama’s first and second names–Barack Hussein–mean “the blessing of Hussein” in Arabic and Persian. His family name, Obama, written in the Persian alphabet, reads O Ba Ma, which means “he is with us,” the magic formula in Majlisi’s tradition.

Mystical reasons aside, the Khomeinist establishment sees Obama’s rise as another sign of the West’s decline and the triumph of Islam. Obama’s promise to seek unconditional talks with the Islamic Republic is cited as a sign that the U.S. is ready to admit defeat.

Response: This is not good at all. It is the type of scenario that Ahmadinejab might take serious and plan accordingly. If there is a perception that the USA is in decline under Obama’s administration and that he is an actual sign that Islam is about to rise up and dominate, the Iranian leaders might miscalculate and bring about an actual confrontation with Israel, the United States, and the West.

Pres. Ahmadinejab has already threatened Israel’s existence on a number of occasions. The Iranians last week tested some new missiles that could reach Israel and parts of Europe. If and when they actually go nuclear–then this scenario could end up having some serious consequences indeed.

It is doubtful that the Israelis would wait to act until a nuclear missile was actually in the air headed their way. Look for a strike way before the Iranians have that capability. One can only guess what the aftermath would bring–it would not be pretty and it could be apocalyptic!           *Top

-Mormons Unfairly Cast as Scapegoats by Gay Activists

All across the nation today, gay activists are picketing and demonstrating in front of Mormon temples, houses of worship, and LDS owned businesses. Yesterday, ‘white powder’ was mailed and received at a number of LDS temples.

What brought all this on–all this reaction against The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?

-Holocaust Survivors: Mormons-Stop Baptizing Our Dead!

By Dr. D | November 12, 2008

image At a news conference on Monday (Nov. 10) in New York, leaders of the American Gathering of Holocaust Survivors said that their negotiations with the Mormon Church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) had ended rather badly.

The Jewish holocaust survivors had asked the LDS leaders to refrain from posthumous baptism of Jewish victims of the holocaust. Ernest Michel, honorary chairman of the American Gathering of Holocaust Survivors, said in a statement:

“We ask you to respect us and our Judaism just as we respect your religion. We ask you to leave our six million Jews, all victims of the Holocaust, alone, they suffered enough.”

The Jewish leaders and the LDS were supposed to have an agreement in place that would limit the baptism of Jewish dead by proxy in the Mormon Temples, but the Jewish group is complaining that the Mormons have violated it on numerous occasions. Apparently the agreement is not completely workable from the LDS perspective.

One of the major practices of the Mormon Church in their Temples is to baptize the dead by proxy. The LDS search genealogical records from all over the world and continue to posthumously baptize all the names of the dead that they can find in any records–that would include Jewish folk and victims of the holocaust.

The practice started with baptizing all the ancestors and relatives of LDS Church members and then expanded from there. For that reason, over the years most faithful Mormon families have been interested in expanding their family genealogy. Baptism by proxy allows faithful Mormons to have their ancestors officially baptized into the LDS Church with the hope of reuniting complete families in the afterlife.

The Mormons believe that the dead have an opportunity to receive the truth and the gospel after death and can receive a better position and a higher kingdom in the afterlife if they are baptized posthumously by proxy in an LDS Temple.

From the Mormon perspective–they are doing something good for the holocaust victims. According to a church representative in Salt Lake, Elder Lance B. Wickman:

“We don’t think any faith group has the right to ask another to change its doctrines,” Wickman said. “If our work for the dead is properly understood … it should not be a source of friction to anyone. It’s merely a freewill offering.”

The whole idea that their dead relatives are being baptized into the Mormon Church is revolting and outrageous to Jews, especially those who went through the holocaust. For them, it is an act that violates their religion and their own family traditions–a religion and tradition that six million paid the ultimate sacrifice for.

This is a conflict that probably can not really be resolved and in the end will only bring some more bad publicity to the Mormons.         *Top
