FAN: Black Noise, Office Buzzword

So, feeling strong after the addition of Belimort to the football lexicon, I have another creation that I'd like to add to the business vernacular. Office buzzwords are so overplayed it's ridiculous. I go out of my way to avoid using them unless I'm an early adopter or I think they're really warranted. For instance, you'll never hear me say "my guy can't do that, he doesn't have enough bandwidth." How about Outside The Box? When people say that to me, I just roll my eyes, right in front of them. We have a guy in our office pretty far up the food chain who can't get through a meeting without saying the word germane. One day he wasn't in for our daily meeting and being the smart ass that I am, I actually said, "Hey, somebody else is going to have to say germane today." Half the attendees cracked up and half of them looked at me like they had no idea what I was talking about. I have a theory about those who had no idea what I was talking about. They have no idea that he says germane every day. You know why? Because they are too busy using their BlackBerry. This is not a rant about Research In Motion's BlackBerry. Heck, I own one. But you won't see me pull it out and check my email while I'm talking to somebody. You also won't see me on it in a meeting I'm in or staring at it blankly as I walk through the halls. You see, people today are too enamored of shiny objects. The people who are pecking away responses at meetings don't get it that only 5% of what they are sending needs to be answered at that very moment. This is my issue. Prioritization, my friends. The CEO is speaking at the daily meeting I'm in and I'm positive people are answering emails about lunch and what they watched on TV last night. A BlackBerry means you can get and answer your email on the go. It does not mean you have to answer Sheila when she asks you if you think Stacey is being a bitch lately. At least not right now. The instruction manual does not say "Stop whatever it is you're doing when an email comes in an answer it or you will be vaporized." So, what's my new buzzword? Have you heard of white noise? As in "Sort through all the white noise and pull out what's germane....er, I mean relevant." Well, I've noticed a trend since being at my first place of business where almost everybody has a CrackBerry......and I'm going to call it Black Noise.....and you are going to forward this article to everyone you know who may think this is funny.....or agree with me. Have you noticed after hours or on weekends when an important email comes out, everyone feels like they have to chime in? Look at me, boss, I'm checking my emails - on the weekend no less! Hmmmm, how can I make sure the boss knows I saw this? I know, I'll reply back to everyone - that way even Sally who never works on weekends will know I'm doing my fair share and she'll see my time/date stamp on Monday. So, on Sunday at 12:57 PM, 37 people get an email from this chronic purveyor of Black Noise that reads.........."I agree". Great! Thanks for that! Bob, who is currently in the local produce aisle looking for lemons feels the buzz in his pocket and starts to sweat. "Shit. Shannon got first. What should I do?" He looks around slowly contemplating his options. He doesn't want to do it, but feels like he must. You see, Bob is aware that he does this thing that hasn't yet been named, but he can't help himself. Slowly he begins to type. He hates himself. "Me too...talk more Monday." He clicks Send and grabs another lemon as he will now need more Vodka to hide his shame. Ladies and Gentlemen of the workforce, I give you.....

Black Noise: (noun) any communication stemming from a RIM BlackBerry (typically off core hours) that adds nothing of importance to a thread. In most cases sent so the sender can feel better about themselves for being involved in some process, even if they don't understand the process in which they are trying to seem a part of.

Now you, my loyal readers, can finally be an early adopter with "Black Noise". Start to use it at your office. Scoff at how much Black Noise Scott sends out on Saturdays. Use it in front of those you don't like without telling them what it means so you will seem more in the know. Go forth, and spread thy word.

FAN: Nature Wins

As I sit here eating a grapefruit that my sister in NH sent from Florida to western PA to our grandmother's house which I then drove to Eastern PA because they can't eat them due to adverse interactions with their medications.....I have to think about the brilliant scientists who design medications. How frustrated do those people have to be that they can't beat the all-powerful grapefruit? I did a little Googling and found page after page dedicated to this very subject. How on Earth can all of that R&D money be spent on drugs and the one thing they can't skirt is this largish yellow citrus fruit? Isn't that just odd? We've had a robot on Mars for 5 years rolling around taking pictures and we can't make a Cholesterol drug that isn't thwarted by something from the produce department at ACME.

FAN: Artie Timing

Mrs. Fan gave me "Too Fat To Fish" by Artie Lange for Christmas. It's a great book, especially if you're a Stern listener. There are stories in the book that I've never heard before and a few that are expanded on. I finished it this morning after just starting it Tuesday, but what a weird coincidence I had reading it on the couch today. I just found out a few hours earlier that John Travolta's son, Jett, had died. He was 16. Near the end of Artie's book, he tells a story about what a huge ass pain Jett's mother, Kelly Preston, was on the set of Jerry Maguire. Artie had a chance meeting with Jett, then 4, while passing baseball on the lot. I think I read one time in the past that Zuko had a kid named Jett....now, all within the same morning, I read of his death and of him as a kid on a movie set. Weird. Weird. Just plain weird..............

DOG: What Are You Listening To? #1

King Sunny Ade

A while back I promised (threatened?) to add some cultural diversity to this blog by adding a more structured music segment outside of Fan posting some stuff about his basement band and some various Kiss and Rush related items... and of course his occasional blues promoting. So in my attempt to stimulate dialogue here, here goes.
So starting this first week of 2009 I'm going to post some things that pump out of my speakers or flow out of my new Bose noise cancelling headphones and pour into my ears. It's going to be very free form. I'll post any number between 5 and maybe a dozen or so of artists I'm currently listening to.
What I'm looking for is to find out what anybody who reads this blog and these posts specifically is listening to themselves. So please put in some comments. You can even make fun of my stuff or ask questions about it. I'll reply as best I can. I am always astounded at what passes for popular music and others probably scratch their heads at what I listen to. So here's what I've been listening to this past week with any applicable comments:
1. The number one thing I'm listening to is a huge variety of African Music. In fact it's what I've got on right now. I put together a play list called Musique Afrique that is a mix of all kinds of African songs. A couple prominent artists in my list that you might want to check out on your own are: King Sunny Ade, Fela Kuti, and Zaiko Langa Langa.

2. Earl Scruggs Revue - In my vain attempt to locate an album by Earl Scruggs called Live at Austin City Limits, I ran across the Earl Scruggs Revue Anniversary Special Vol. 1. So I've been listening to it instead.
3. Little Walter (Jacobs) - I can just put this on and listen to that Chicago blues all day long.
4. Squirrel Nut Zippers - Hot. I've had this album since it came out in 1996. And I don't remember liking it as much as I do now. Never throw out those CD purchases you think you went wrong with. Just listen to them 12 years later!
5. Guns N Roses - Chinese Democracy. It's pretty good. Can't see why it took 10 years to release. Nor why all the fuss about it being prematurely released on some internet site.
6. Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown - Just came across an album of Gatemouth's from 1977 that I thought was out of print called Black Jack. This is like finding a brand new release to me. Never heard any of this before.
7. Dave Edmunds - A DJ on the old WHFS in Annapolis named "Weasel" used to play this guy all the time back in the mid-80s. I just acquired a bunch of his albums and have enjoyed rehearing a lot of this stuff.
8. The Doors - Got ahold of a bootleg of a Doors concert in Pittsburgh in 1970. When Jim Morrison was still alive and the Civic Arena was called the Pittsburgh Ice Arena.
9. The Del McCoury Band - Had a buddy of mine go to the big Christmas Jam down in Asheville, NC that Warren Haynes of Gov't Mule & the Allman Bros. puts on every year. And he was talking about Warren jamming with bluegrass/country legend Del McCoury. So I thought I'd bust out some of Del McCoury and give it a new listen.
10. Todd Rundgren - Just picked up the bigger part of his discography that I didn't already own.
Just realized I should have done this in reverse (10-1) order like Letterman. In a week or two I'll do this again and I'll do it that way. Until then, what are you listening to?

FAN: Opportunistic Lawyer

How can you read this article and not wonder if this was a complete setup. Obviously these are bright people involved. Who better than a Muslim lawyer to board a plane with an entire group of Muslims and proceed to openly talk about the subject matter while the passengers are boarding the plane? They get kicked off, interviewed, cleared......and now he is already talking about a civil suit. They will pay him to settle and he'll make millions and write a book. God Bless America.

FAN: Technically I Own Belimort

On 2/3/2008, I referred to Bill Belichick as Belimort. I recently looked at searches that landed at SCS and one of them was for Belimort. I did my own Google search and found that even though one other person used it, I used it first. When you think about it, if you were to merge Patriot's coach Bill Belichick with any other famous villain - who would it be? It flows so beautifully. Maybe Adolf Hitler, but how could you phrase it? Darth Vader? Same issue. I wish this would catch on and become part of the football lexicon. Just think of the marketing opportunities if Belichick embraced this idea. Even though Disney doesn't make the Potter movies, they do distribute them...don't they? Belimort T-Shirts would fly off the shelves. I can see Patriots authentic jerseys with number '666' on the back and "Belimort"stitched into history. I am hereby petitioning all NFL fans, heck, anybody that reads this, to copy as many football fans as you know with this link. I want to add Belimort to the NFL vernacular. Can't you just see this character stalking the sidelines, breathing heavily through his mouth, turning quickly in disgust after every bad play...... My dream would be for Belimort to be as big as Chucky during the week Mr. Gruden went to the Super Bowl. Voldemort, meet Bill Belichick.....brought to you by Steel City Slant.

DOG: New Year's Reflection Back

Welcome to 2009! People celebrate New Years in lots of different ways. To me it's no big deal and a good night to stay home. It's nothing more than the night before a ton of college bowl games. That's all. So, how did I spend New Years Eve? I took a look back. Way back to January of 1975 to be exact. Figured the ringing in of a new year was cause to get a little nostalgic (that's a fancy word for geezing). And a great opportunity to check out one of my best Christmas gifts... All 5 Steeler Super Bowls on DVD!

So I decided to start at the beginning and look at Super Bowl IX first. First off, the DVD is mastered from video tape which does not age well at all. It's hard for me to believe the NFL could not repair the images any better than what they did while digitizing the output. But nonetheless, the poor quality of the image (which is painfully obvious when watching on a big screen HDTV) gave the DVD a realistic feel of watching the game as it was broadcast in 1975. Like if you had rabbit ears picking up WIIC (later WPXI channel 11 in Pittsburgh). Furthermore, it contains the original broadcast announcing. Curt Gowdy, Don Meredith, Al DeRogatis, with Charley Jones as the sideline reporter who is never seen and comments only once about wind and the flags surrounding Tulane Stadium in New Orleans.

I used to hate Curt Gowdy at the time. He was always washing the balls of the Oakland Raiders and that was inexcusable for me. Al DeRogatis was useless. Don Meredith was both entertaining and enlightening. And for sure, Meredith did not take the game so damn serious as we do today. Dandy Don used a very light hearted approach. Down home Texas-style, which was just his natural personality. The announcing was so much better than the douche-bags they put on the air today. I didn't like Gowdy but he was worlds ahead of anyone manning the booth now.

But wow, I did not realize how the NFL has changed. Goodness, it was an eye opening experience. And it started right at the kickoff... from the 35 yard line. Here are just some random differences I noticed and other interesting notes:

  • Fred Cox, the Minnesota placekicker was still kicking "straight ahead." He was one of the last of that breed.
  • Blocking rules have really changed. I saw Ray Mansfield chop Carl Eller at the knee while he was engaged with Gerry Mullins. That's a clear penalty today. Not so in 1975.
  • Dwight White and Jack Lambert were getting in all kinds of late shots, punches and shoves after the whistle. No flags.
  • Anybody who thinks the '08 Steeler defense is anywhere near as good as the Steel Curtain needs to look at this game. Our current defense is no doubt the best in the league. But the Steel Curtain (which hadn't even peaked in 1975) was overwhelmingly better.
  • There were an alarming number of white men playing for both the Vikings and the Steelers. I'd guess twice as many as today.
  • Almost every Steeler offensive play involved Rocky Bleier shifting from tailback in the I to a two back split backfield.
  • Terry Bradshaw had a rocket arm. But he was very undisciplined. And he was a very good runner. There were several plays called as designed runs for Bradshaw in this game.
  • The Steelers ran quick trap after quick trap and did so succesfully.
  • Jeff Siemon and Jackie Wallace had great games for Minnesota which are completely forgotten. The Purple People Eaters came to play. Most of the rest of their team did not.
  • Minnesota coach, Bud Grant, also won four Grey Cups in the CFL as a coach, played pro football with the Philadelpia Eagles and Winnipeg Blue Bombers, and played NBA basketball with the Lakers! He took his team to 4 Super Bowls but did not win any.
  • A lot more tripping and clipping penalties back then too.
  • On one 4th down play for the Vikings they actually called "mutual offsides" which resulted in no play. Nobody made a big deal about it. Today there would be multiple replay reviews, and a million people crying like stuck pigs. The game just went on and the Vikings punted. Very similar to the famous no call in the Steeler-Colts playoff game in '06.
  • Franco Harris was a beast. Absolutely at the peak of his game in 1975. Inside or outside he was a punishing runner.
  • Players were much smaller. Although they were still big men, not a 300 pounder to be found on either roster.

I remember watching this game live when it happened. But looking at it 34 years later I realize there was more to see than what I saw. Probably true about lots of things in life when we take a moment to look back.

FAN: Romeo Is Bleeding

Wow. Slantedamus is back in action. Even before the season started I nailed this one and then had these two very very early in the season. Look for Fan & Dog in the morning, soon to take over for Mike & Mike. Maybe he should go to Notre Dame and Charlie can come coach the Browns? Maybe Belimort should come back and prove his worth?

FAN: Elmer's Calls Shanahan

Why was this so shocking to everybody? The man has won 1 Division Title in the past 10 years. Give me a break. Terrel Davis was acting like The Pope got stabbed tonight on NFL Network. I say good riddance. My only concern is that the Browns hire him. Then, we'll have to look at his ugly puss twice a year for the near future. Hopefully he will go elsewhere....out to pasture? The glue factory? The headline possibilities are endless for this one. Anyone have a good one they want to share? Shanahan Horse Collared!

DOG: Crazy Doggone Hats

Hope everybody had a nice Christmas. Jeez, this place has been dead since I left for Christmas in Texas.
Anyway, I promised some photos in crazy hats which is indeed a family trait. So here is big Dog and little Dog on Christmas morning. In a grocery store full of Dallas Cowboy gear little Dog walked in wearing his new Steelers winter cap. Mission accomplished, so far. (It helped that the Cowgirls took it hard 44-6 from the Eagles to cement my proposition that the Cowgirls suck).

In case you might be wondering, I did not wear my Big Daddy jersey to the airport, just a throwback cap. However Mrs. Dog wore her new Steelers zip-up fleece hoodie. And while getting a sausage egg and cheese McMuffin at 6:45am in the DFW airport this morning. I had to wait in line behind a guy wearing an authentic #58 Jack Lambert jersey. We are everywhere.

Merry Christmas Holly & Joy

Joy Bisco
Holly Huddleson

Much like last year's Merry Christmas post, I wanted to do something similar this year...only this year instead of searching for random girls to display here, I decided I would key in Holly and Joy individually into Google Images and take a photo from the first page of returns. Not bad choices, right?

FAN: This Ends It

Now, please don't try to tell me I look more like Jimmy Walker than this little idiot from the boy band. Man, I was at my fighting weight in that picture! Any more Jimmy Walker photos get posted....as the admin I'm taking them down!!!!

DOG: Drinkin' TNT, Smokin' Dyn-o-mite!

Did Jimmie "JJ" Walker get into some of Michael Jackson's magic skin whitener and take up cigars?

Did Still A. Fan go to his company Christmas party in blackface?

FAN: Ho Ho Ho

But Stilladog, can you pull off a Santa hat while waiting in car line at elementary school? You know the men in our blood line have a penchant for silly hats.

FAN: Who Would Play Fan?

Well, the options aren't good. "You look like Brad Pitt" is something I'm not used to hearing. They say everyone resembles a celebrity, but I can't think of one that I really look like. I've only ever been told I look like three people and I don't think I look like any of them. When Tom Green had his own show, someone said I looked like him. I don't think so. Then, someone I used to work with said I reminded her of Jeff Goldblum. When people who overheard her disagreed with her, she switched her tune to that I sounded like him and carried myself like him.....whatever that means. Lastly, and I'll never forget this, at either my daughter's first or second birthday party an old neighbor's daughter who was about 15 at the time told me that I looked like some dude in 98 Degrees....one of those "boy bands" that contained Nick and Drew Lachey. Quite an ego boost when a high school girl tells you that you look like a member of 98 Degrees at the advanced age of 32. Later that day when I looked up pictures of the band, my ego deflated like a balloon when I saw that the band contained 3 strapping young good-looking dudes and one geeky looking skinny dude. I've actually seen a picture of him before (Justin Jeffre) where I could have sent it to people as my own and it would have passed....but it was only that one and I can't find it. He was wearing a hockey jersey....maybe a Ranger's one. Still Moor, no references to MC Hammer please!!!!

FAN: Who Would Play Dog?

Without the hair, Don Novello does indeed look like the spitting image of Stilladog. Lose the hair on this picture and it could easily fool me. When Dog answered " Don Novello" to Still A While's question about who would play him in the DeepThroat movie - I shit you not - I said to myself "Don Novello? Who the hell is that? If he looks like anybody it's Father Guido Sarducci". I had no idea they were one and the same. Here is a picture of Stilladog that I posted a long time ago. He looks a little slimmer here and he's with Anna Kournakova on their wedding day. I can't find a picture of the Dog when he syncs up as well to this picture as I remember him. I'm guessing he has one from when the goat first started to look like it was dipped in white paint.....and without a baseball hat on.

DOG: Dock Ellis Dead

Sorry for being the grim reaper all the time around here. But Dock Ellis is a true piece of Pittsburgh sportslore whose passing should not go unreported here at Steel City Slant.

Dock Ellis was one of the wildest dudes ever to put on a uniform in any sport bearing the name Pittsbugh. I'll just list a few of the man's unforgettable deeds and allow other old Pirate fans so supply some of their memories in the comments.
  • Dock Ellis once pitched a no-hitter high on LSD.
  • Dock Ellis once hit 4 of the first 5 batsmen he faced in a game against the Reds.
  • Dock Ellis was one of the best pitchers we had when we won the 1971 World Series.
  • Dock Ellis was notorious for buying hot dogs (and eating them) from ballpark vendors near the bullpen on days when he wasn't scheduled to pitch.
  • Dock Ellis and Willie Stargell sometimes attended Steeler games together back at old Pitt Stadium.
  • Who can ever forget the knucklehead working his afro-do in curlers?

Happy Trails, Dock!

DOG: Disrespecting The Towel

On a day when Bruce Arians continued his idiotic play calling coupled with QB play which wasn't great and offensive line play that was just awful. The story is not so much how the Stillers sucked. But what lies in store for the Titans.

The Steelers looked tired and beat. And after the stretch of tough games we've had, I was tired as a fan too. Looked to me like Dick LeBeau played a very vanilla, pre-seasonlike defense too. Yesterday's game does not have me worried. I trust that Mike Tomlin can get the boys back on track for a playoff run. But if I was a Titans fan I'd be very worried.

Lendale White stomped on a Terrible Towel on the sideline and Jevon Kearse blew his nose into one. Do these knuckleheads not watch football on TV? Did they not see what happened to the Bengals when TJ Houshurmamma buffed his shoes with a Terrible Towel after a Bengals win in '05? Mark my words, evil will befall them.

I guess the Titans just got mad because of how Stiller fans overtook their stadium with the towels yesterday. But that was like signing a death warrant. Just stupid. Although if you noticed, the towel White desecrated was not a "real" terrible towel at all. It was a bootleg ripoff of one. That stupid ass didn't even get a real towel to use for his stunt. Oh, karma is going to be a bitch.

FAN: 18 For 29 Will Not Work

Where is Danny Kreider? Where is Jon Witman? Where is Tim Lester? Actually, where is anybody? I see enough burst out of Willie Parker to not think he's injured. I see Mewelde Moore snap off some decent runs. What I rarely see is a bruising fullback hitting the hole first and knocking a linebacker on their ass. Today's running game was a joke. This season's running game is a joke. Something needs to be fixed. I don't think we should rest anyone next week - at least for the first half. I'd like to see us run 10 times in a row on the first drive. Our ground game is in shambles. Why we continue to run with no help is beyond me. We have 4 wide receivers out there and then we run. We run out of multiple TE sets and I don't think it's working. I'd rather see 1 or 2 and a fullback in the backfield. Running the ball is about attitude and execution. We have the commitment, obviously, because we continue to run Willie into the middle of the pile without an escort. What you're basically telling me is that our offensive line can't pass block.....and they can't run block. For the second year in a row, they are our Achilles heel and we really didn't do anything to address it besides swapping a less than mediocre center for a slightly better than average center. I don't care one bit about losing the game today. I didn't expect to be the #2 seed before the season began so I'll take it. Also, this game pointed out that we may not be as good as we've been thinking for the past 3 weeks and it will keep us honest. Can we beat the Titans? Absolutely. Jesus, they were so afraid to throw against us all they did sans one pass was allow Collins to throw short and outside all day. It's been a long time since we were leading with 5 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter and then end up losing. I want to run. We need to run. What we can't do is continue to run the plays Arians is sending in. Instead of a Wide Recievers coach being our OC, I liked it much better when a TE was....and that's church.

DOG: The Death of Deep Throat

Just read in the news where W. Mark Felt, aka “Deep Throat” passed away at 95. The man who supplied Woodward & Bernstein with their inside information on the Watergate break-in has passed away.

The revelation that Mr. Felt was Deep Throat completely surprised me back in 2005. I never would have guessed it was him. Why did it impact me so profoundly? Because I knew W. Mark Felt personally. And the man I knew would not be giving inside FBI information to the news media.

In January of 1973 I went to work for the FBI at their Washington DC headquarters. For my first and longest assignment there I was assigned to work at the Department of Justice building in the Files and Communications division of the FBI. This was less than a year since the passing of J. Edgar Hoover and Felt’s subsequent rise to Associate Director, the second most powerful man in the FBI. President Nixon had appointed L. Patrick Gray as Director after Hoover’s death.

My job was to distribute communications, and sometimes evidence, to the various directors and departments including the crime lab. This meant that I could possibly be in Mr. Felt’s office a dozen times a week. Everybody I worked with was afraid of Felt. They said he was mean. Some called him a prick. But I decided to make up my mind for myself.

Upon first meeting Mr. Felt, well, let’s just say he made a remarkable first impression. He was a tall man about 6’ 2” I’d say. And he had pure white hair which was perfectly combed and in place. And he had a steely look in his eyes that could turn a room ice cold. He was always impeccably dressed in a blue suit and white shirt and tie. But he was always friendly to me. We never talked about much besides the usual pleasantries and how the weather was. He didn’t seem like a prick to me. But I was always on my guard when I was in his office.

He always contended that he was not “Deep Throat.” Even though H. R. Haldeman pretty much had him pegged for the informant as early as 1974, he always denied the allegations. And I believed him. This guy put the Bureau and his country above all else. I was just sure it would be someone other than him.

Anyway, there I was. Probably delivering Watergate information to W. Mark Felt without even knowing it. Talk about clueless. Unbelieveable.

Hard to say the man had integrity after lying about his role in Watergate all these years. And after his indictment (and subsequent pardon by Pres. Reagan) for authorizing illegal wiretaps, break-ins and surveillance to investigate the Weather Undergound. But he did have integrity. I will tell you this, he was a loyal American. And our country was a safer place because of men like W. Mark Felt.

DOG: Here We Go Cowgirls!

There's a Saturday night NFL game this week which 70% of NFL fans will be unable to see because it's on their stupid NFL Network. But it's a very important game with playoff implications in both conferences. It's between the Baltimore Shitbirds and the Dallas Cowgirls. And it will be the final game in old Texas Stadium in Irving, TX.

As much as I detest the Cowgirls, I absolutely loathe the Shitbirds. Therefore I will be rooting for Dallas all the way. Hoping the ghosts of famous Cowgirls past will rise up to smote the evil Shitbirds. Tom Landry, Bob Lilly, Bob Hayes, Roger Staubach, Danny White, Too Tall Jones, and Tony Dorsett, built their reputations here. Some of them Hall of Fame reputations. They must help the new Cowgirls protect their house. For the first time, since Eddie LeBaron was their QB, I'm going to see what it's like to root for America's Team.

We have no magic left in this stadium. We last played and won there in 2004, in a game where Ben Roethlisberger cemented his place in my mind as "our QB for a long time." And that's the last time the Terrible Towel waved in Texas Stadium. So us Stiller fans will just have to watch this one (if you can find NFL Network anywhere).

But fear not Stiller fans. While the new Dallas stadium nearby is still under construction, the Terrible Towel has already taken it's place there. Yes sir, we already own that stadium. As the above photo shows, Steeler Nation is indeed everywhere. So here's to you Texas Stadium, time for us to move on. But you still have one more opponent to vanquish. Thanks for some great football.

(Yes, the accompanying photo was taken in 2007 during construction of the new Dallas stadium. It is the first Terrible Towel to be waved in that venue... but it won't be the last!)

FAN: Three Dollar Bill, Y'All

This must be the recording studio for rap MUZAK. It's enough to make you think the dude from Best In Show and The Breakup is in on a hidden camera show. He's a dead ringer for the conductor. I don't know many things, but I think I know funny. This, is funny.

DOG: "Slingin' Sammy" Baugh Dead at 94

The greatest football player to ever step foot upon the gridiron passed away yesterday at his West Texas ranch. Like my father, he didn't die of anything in particular. To quote Baugh's son, "He just finally wore out."

I never saw Sammy Baugh play. His NFL career spanned the years 1937-1952. I've seen film of Sammy Baugh though and he was a more amazing player for that era than anything I have ever witnessed with my own eyes.
He was a skinny wiry guy with a thick Texas drawl. I remember hearing him talk one time about playing against the Steelers and Ernie Stautner in particular. He said, "I played for Washington and we played Pittsburgh pretty often. Whether we was going up there or they was coming down to our place, the games was always the same. Most times we'd win the game and they'd put about 4 or 5 of our guys in the hospital."

Sammy Baugh was an All-American at TCU and led them to Sugar Bowl and Cotton Bowl wins and a National Championship. You will recall in one of my first articles on this blog that I wrote about the Single Wing formation and it's profound impact on football today. In that article I mentioned Coach Dutch Meyer of TCU and his innovative use of passing plays from the Single Wing. Well, guess who the quarterback of Dutch Meyer's TCU teams that invented the Single Wing passing attack was. That's right, Sammy Baugh. In fact, it was a Ft. Worth sportswriter who nicknamed him "Slingin' Sammy" (for his baseball skills!). Baugh was to Meyer what Jim Thorpe was to Glen "Pop" Warner. To quote Meyer, he was "the greatest athlete I ever saw."

After college he did a short stint as a calf roper in the Rodeo and signed a Triple-A contract to play baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals. But he only hit .220 and decided football would be the way to get enough money to buy his own ranch.

Sammy Baugh was the Redskins #1 draft choice in 1936 and the NFL game was never the same. Baugh brought with him the ability to throw a football better than anyone in the game. It was the beginning of the bona fide passing attack in professional football.

He led the Redskins to the NFL Title in his rookie season of 1937 and again in 1942. He was also the losing QB in the most lopsided NFL Title game ever played. That being the 1940 NFL Championship game where George Halas' Chicago Bears defeated Baugh's Redskins 73-0.

He was an all-Pro 9 times in his NFL career. And for as good of a passer as he was, he was the consummate all-around football player. In 1943 he led the NFL in passing, punting, and interceptions. He once threw for 4 TDs and intercepted 4 passes in a single game. He threw for 6 TDs in a game twice. And most amazing to me is that he still holds the single season record for punting average of 51.4 yards per kick which he set in 1940. Oh yeah, he led the NFL in passing 6 times. And for playing in an era when passing was minimal, he still holds the Washington Redskins record for career TD passes (187) and season completion percentage (70.3).

Baugh was the last surviving member of the inaugural class of Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees.

FAN: They Might Come

So, over the past 3 days, we actually had a healthy percentage increase in readership. CLose to 60% more on Monday and Tuesday and 100% increase today. Cool. If you sent links out - thanks! If you didn't, may the spit of three drooling dalmations make it's way onto your pillow tonight while you sleep. Now, the funniest and coolest thing I noticed about the web hits was this....a Google search for "Haluski origin" landed here at The Slant. I wanted to see where we landed on the actual Google page so I clicked the link....BAM!....we're second. Yes folks, if you ever search Google for "Haluski Origin", your second choice will be Stilladog's article about his vast Haluski knowledge. This actually gives me an idea. Obviously there isn't a webpage dedicated to the origins of Haluski. Should one start one, and pepper it with Haluski references and photos so aptly named....it should garner sufficient hits to make money from Google AdSense. You don't even have to host the site....just create a Haluski Blog.....Blogluski!

Cute Foo-FooHandsome Gator

A comment poster used a picture of his mom's boxer as his avitar on one of my earlier topic posts. And Still A. While said he was "cute" just like a certain lame-leg QB from New England who she refused to name because she knew I'd be all over it like fleas on a hound. But he was not cute. He was handsome. So here's the truth about dogs:

Male dogs are not cute, they are handsome.
Female dogs are not cute, they are beautiful.

Some dogs (like many people) are neither handsome nor beautful nor cute.

Foo-Foo dogs are cute but, in my opinion, they are undesirable as pets. For instance, you cannot expect a Foo-Foo dog to protect your property from the ravages of ground hogs, opossums, rabbits, moles, squirrels, and snakes. Fortunately there are many many people who do not share my opinion of Foo-Foo dogs. And that's fine because Foo-Foos need good homes too.

The handsome Dalmatian pictured above is my late great Florida Alligator Dog known as "Gator."

The white foo-foo dog is an example of cute... does resemble Tom Brady doesn't she?
