Homemade applesauce
B and K made applesauce, with the food mill, out of local organic macintosh apples from our farmer's market.
It was fun to make...

...And even more fun to eat!

Our young friend E approves too. We're told it's his favourite first solid food. Here he is being cute and practicing rolling over. K is very generous about sharing his old baby toys when E comes over for a visit.

Babkabousha!
K made a track for the circular plastic piece left when a roll of scotch tape was used up. The track has been a work in progress all weekend; it is made from cardboard, masking tape, and some duct tape (after the masking tape just wasn't sticky enough).
K says that when the roll falls off the track along the way he says "Waah waah." When it completes the track, rolling into the box at the end, he says "Bravo!" And when it completes the track but doesn't roll into the box at the bottom he says "Babkabousha!" - as illustrated in this video:

Pumpkins 2008!
Here's a photo essay of our halloween decoration creation this year.
Picking the cornstalks and small pumpkin from the garden:
Picking the BIG pumpkin from our garden! It turned out to be a wise idea to plant pumpkins in 2 very different places in our yard, as one did much better than the other, being drier and sunnier.
B & K carved a jack-o-lantern in the big pumpkin:

K drew an adorable face on a tiny pumpkin he got from school:
And K made some other assorted decorations for our front window too. We were well-decorated this year!

Taiko
Chibi means "little kid" and Taiko means "big drum."
And K is very excited to be starting to take lessons from Chibi Taiko, a local youth taiko ensemble!
Chibi Taiko has a website/blog, if you're interested in checking it out.
And you can see some of the senior members of Chibi Taiko in action, playing at this year's Cherry Blossom Festival, in this YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_2Yw6TupTU
At 5:28 the segment with Chibi Taiko (in the flame shirts) begins.
If you want to see more taiko, TAIKOPROJECT, in Los Angeles CA, has a lot of great videos up on YouTube, where you can see a broad range of traditional and modern taiko styles. You may even have seen/heard TAIKOPROJECT on commericals for Nike or Mistubishi.

Homemade shofar
We went to a neat Secular Rosh Hashana / Yom Kippur Observance
last weekend, at which all the kids got to make and decorate shofars (made from pvc piping). K's been having a good time making a lot of noise with it ever since.
Here's K in his pyjamas giving a demo of his shofar:
(The embouchure is a little tough while you're giggling, as you can see.)

An independent writer
Now that K can sound our words and write them himself, he can do fun stuff like...add items to our farmers' market shopping list:

Word on the Street Festival
K helped D run a table at the Word on the Street Festival at Library Square downtown this year. It's a big festival all about books. We saw a book reading by the author of the Stanley books, did a scavenger hunt, and and K got to walk across the stage with the summer reading club medalists from our branch, because he read (and recorded) 50 books over the summer.
This is K spinng the wheel at our table (for the Libray Association's Information Policy group). When you spin the wheel, they ask you a question and if you're right or not you get a candy! K's question was about Internet filters. See if you know the answer!
Q. Can you see if there's a filter on your Internet or not, just by looking at the outside of the computer?
A: No! (K got it right, did you?)
This is a picture of an electric eel being tickled by seaweed while it's reading the newspaper. K drew this as part of the scavenger hunt.

This is all K's loot from the festival - he really cleaned up!
K would like to add that we rode a bus that we don't usually ride to get home from the festival.
Bye! Love, Kobi.

Visit with Aunt D
Before the beginning of grad school, Aunt D came for a visit! We met up in Bellingham, but our plans for a Mount Baker area hike were foiled by bad weather, so we went to the children's museum and ince cream shop instead. Then Aunt D came Back home with us and hung out in our neck of the woods for a day.
K& Aunt D picked the last of our prune plums (which are now prunes, thanks to our dehydrater!)

We picked a whole lot of other stuff too - this time of year the garden really earns its keep!

We went on a little walk in Lighthouse Park, a very well hidden but lovely seeming park in West Van. K & Aunt D scoped out all the fungus along the way. Here's Aunt D looking things up in her mushroom book.
And here's the view of the lighthouse that was our destination. Next time we go to the park we'll allot more time and go all the way down to the lighthouse.

Kobi does math problems on his easel at home:

And helps D put together some new shelves:

K's class has a website this year (see the link in the blog sidebar), with links to French kid websites to practice vocabulary and numbers. He now gets computer time at his desk while we cook dinner:

Today K read his first French book all by himself! What is even more impressive to me is that he read it upside-down while pretending to be the teacher reading to me, the class.

And finally, these are flowers from our garden that K helped pick as a boquet for our friend Martha who moved to Austin at the end of the summer:

Here's K goofing around before we left for the first day of Grade 1 this morning:

Anemones
Last year, when we told K he coul dhave his own garden plot this year, he decided he wanted flowers that looked like sea anemones. We got dahlias with curly petals. After a lot of patience, the flowers have now bloomed, and the resemblance is striking!

The Aquarium with Nana & Papa
Nana and Papa are visiting, all the way from Maine! Last weekend we all took a fun trip to the aquarium. We saw a 4-dolphin show (2 are new to the show!)

And the baby beluga, who theyère pretty sure is a girl, swimming with mama beluga Qila:

Here are Nana, Papa, B & K, watching the otter get fed:
And here is the cute little guy munching on an oyster:

In the rainforest exhibit, K was especially taken by this large colourful parrot.

Sasquatch Provincial Park
Camping at Sasquatch Provincial Park was great!
We took a hike on the Beaver Pond trail. Didn't see any beavers, but did see lots of frogs!

The park has 4 lakes of varying sizes. K had fun building dams and lakes along this little creak that ran into Hicks Lake:

The views were typical BC beautiful:
We found that K is now too big to sit double (on a grown-up's lap) in a one-person kayak. So B tethered the kayak and let K paddle solo in a nice shallow area.
He was a natural kayaker!

Writing!
Now that school's out (and there is no pressure to sit still and practice writing), K has become quite a writer!
It's fun to see what he writes about - the subjects that loom large in the minds of 5-year-olds.
For example, we had the "Beware of dogs with sharp teeth" series:

And the bad guys in jail talking about poop:

(text translation:
-You are poop
-Ha ha
-You are bad
-Poop boy
-Bad boy
-Let's go get our swords

Camping, part 2
We took a few hikes while camping, because K is now old enough to do short hikes! We took one along a river and up to some waterfalls. This is a view along the way.
Here's K inside a hollow stump along the trail.

Here's the waterfalls at the end! The spray was very wet! We had lunch nearby before coming back down.

K took this picture. It is a big old tree stmp with a younger tree growing out of the middle of it! We saw lots of examples of tree roots climbing around, over and through big old stumps in this forest.

This was an old downed tree that looked like a whale!

Camping part 1
We went camping at Golden Ears Provincial Park! It was sunny and beautiful!
K marked his spot:
The wooded area was carpeted with moss and moss hung from the trees. It was really neat.

There were lots of big old tree stumps, like this one. K climbed up this himself!

K has developed a habit of twirling his hair. Are things like that hereditary?

This was the beach a short walk from our campsite. Not sandy, but beautiful view.

Party, bunny & garden
Kobi's rocket pinata. K&D made this on a rainy day last fall. Kobi wanted to have a "school's out (& half birthday) party." We had a barbeque with some friends, and the kids demolished the pinata. We don't have any big trees in our yard that we could hang it from, so we set it on a milk crate and let the kids hit it off, t-ball style.

This is the rude bunny that was wreaking havoc on our garden this spring. B caught it under a laundry basket. Here it is in the cat carrier waiting to go to the spca.

K has his own garden for the first time this year. He's growing lavendar, dahlias that looks like sea anemones, glads, beans, corn, and pumpkins. This picture was a few weeks ago, post-bunny. The garden is much more lush now!

Here's K being a garden helper, washing out some flats we used to hold seed-starting containers this spring.

The making of the money truck
I don't even know where they came from, but we've had these 3 little wooden model kits in a closet for a long time now: a truck, racecar and boat. K saw them and asked about them, and really wanted to make them. Well, what do you know? He's old enough to build a model now!
We sanded the pieces, and painted them all:

Then glued them together:

And when the glue was dry, K had a "money truck." It apparently drives around with a truckbed full of money to give to people who don't have any. Sweet.

Baby Beluga
Our local aquarium has a beluga whale, Qila (whom you may recognize from the many TV shows and movies she's been in, courtesy of living in "Hollywood North"), who was born at the aquarium 13 years ago (her mom, Aurora, is still at the aquarium too). Qila recently gave birth to her first calf, and there is much excitement in town about this. Baby beluga whales often do not make it out of infancy, and they're not exactly sure why. Baby beluga had an infection recently and everyone was worried, but it seems to be pulling through okay.
Cool things for anyone who finds this interesting include:
Raffi would be proud.
Cool things for anyone who finds this interesting include:
- the beluga web cam - you can see Qila & baby swimming around in real time!
- YouTube video of the baby's birth! (tail first...I don't know if that's usual or not)
- a recording of the first calls back & forth between Qila & calf
Raffi would be proud.
More vacation pics!
After the wedding we headed North to visit B's side of the family. We stopped at an animal park along the way. The bears were the scariest:

We stayed for several days with Aunt W, Uncle D, and more cousins.
K got to hang out with C while E was in school:

But all 3 kiddos had a good time together:
Nana & Papa came at the end of the week, and had some nice grandkid time. Here the civil engineer showing modern kids how to build a lincoln log cabin:

All the kids got in on the gift-giving action in celebration of Nana & Papa's retirement! We look forward to seeing them out here on their big road trip this summer.

Our vacation, part 1
We had a great long vacation back East, visiting family! We'll post some pictures in 2 rounds. Part 1 is Uncle E & Aunt A's wedding. It was beautiful and K had a lot of fun meeting some new cousins. Here's a glimpse. (Note: our camera broke, so these were all taken by Grandma or Grandpa.)

Kobi Reads!
Kobi has recently started to read whole books in English! (At school they only teach French reading/writing.) It is very exciting for all of us, and he's working his way through a set of easy readers this week at about a new book a day.
I'm learning a bit more about video editing (just a bit though) so we've decided to webcast a few Storytimes with Kobi. Here's the first, "Puddles," in which Mouse gets quite soggy.

(Still working on the audio, but this may require a hardware upgrade...it's a bit tinny. Let us know if you can't make out the narration.)

Full of ideas
K is full of songs, stories and ideas these days. Here are a couple of examples that come to mind:
1) Science Fair Project - K got to visit that older kids' science fair at school. Now he's trying to think up good science fair projects. His current plan is an experiment that involves eggs and various solutions in which the eggs may or may not float. (I told him we don't have to wait till grade 5 to try this out.)
2) Occupation - K has decided (yet again) what he wants to do when he grows up. What is neat about this decision is that it's the first time he's come up with something totally out of his head, and not based on admiring someone else and wanting to be like them (singer, firefighter, librarian, etc.). He wants to buy houses for people who don't have homes. We talked and he figures he'll probably have to get the money from rich people. What an awesome career path!

Snow & Cherry blossoms
It's lovely, warm and sunny now, but a few weeks ago we had snow! No accumulation, but still startling for Vancouverites!

And our sad March catch-up
Also in March, and part of why we got so behind, is that D's grandmother, K's Great-grandma Debbie, passed away.
Here's K and Great-Grandma Debbie, last time he saw her:

We've had a lot of talks, a lot of candle-lighting, tears, hugs, and story-telling. K had decided that he will now try to give out lots of hugs and love, because that is something Great-grandma Debbie was so great at. (He says, "We call her GREAT grandma because she gave the greatest hugs, right?"_
He also got to take home a treasure box full of tchachkas from Grandma Debbie's apartment. He likes to take down these treasures and play with them:

More March catch-up posts
We had a fun visit with D's college friend & her partner. K was in charge of selling origami pastries to everyone:

B&K dyed eggs:

K tried on pigtails for size, in an attempt to keep his hair from getting wet when he was just taking a "playing bath." (Cute & keeps all the hair out of his eyes! Too bad it's not socially acceptable for boys to wear pigtails out of the house.)

With apologies for the haitus. March was crazy. We'll catch up bit by bit.

Spring in February!
One of the delightful things about living in Vancouver is springtime in February. Makes up for the extreme dark that is December in Canada.
We've had a week of lively warm days, rainstorms that shrank to passing sprinkles in defiance of the weather report, and sunshiney skies (expect for the night of the eclipse, when it was determinedly overcast).
Today:
We worked on the garden

And played t-ball

Snowy days & facepaint
We had snow!
K & B built a snow fort in our yard:

One of K's kindercare teachers painted about 20 5 year olds to look like "princess kitties." That evening we came home to a surprise package from a friend back East - it contained a little woolen mouse for K!
Cat & mouse:
Yum....mouse...

Keeping busy
We're back to school for the new semester, but keeping busy having fun around hom on the weekends. Started Aikido class last weekend, but no pics of that yet. K especially liked the part where he was instructed to wrestle his parent to the ground! Here's a bit of what we've been doing...

Kobi learns to sew, and other adventures
Here's K's first sewing project - a pillow! (B corrects me - it's actually his second, as she first had him make a needle holder for his needles.)

A familiar sight for Nana and Papa? K spins on his sit & spin in the kitchen while I cook dinner.
I took this because I just think it's interesting that our child who won't eat carrots, peas, salad, tomatoes, oranges, strawberries, and so many relatively kid-friendly foods will eat udon noodles with tofu and a side of seaweed.

Grandfather Clock Video
Here it is - the video of K demo-ing his k'nex grandfather clock. Unfortunately, we have since learned that neither blogger nor youtube allows us to upload videos in portrait layout, so it will look rotated 90* here. Sorry about that. We'll know not to shoot that way in the future!
Holiday happenings, part 1
The last weeks leading up to winter break were a flurry of activity. It seemed more intense this year now that K is in school. School concert, kindercare concert, school part, kindercare party, field trip, making cookies at school....etc. Whew. Here are some pictures from all that:
1) "Je m'appel Kobi et je suis gentil" (My name is Kobi and I am nice):

2) K with a life-sized painting he did of a nutcracker!:
3) K's school concert. (What chaos!) (He's standing, near the middle, in a red sweater with dark stripe across the chest.)

4) A graham cracker gingerbread house K made...I forget where. Kindercare maybe?

Holiday happenings, part 2
This year, for the first time, we're all just hanging around
home for the holidays. While we miss seeing people, it has been
nice to have some quiet downtime, unpack those last boxes from the summer's move, etc. K has been having a *great* time playing with all his new toys, and he went to the birthday party of his buddy with the often-lonely Boxing Day birthday.
Here are some pics of our week:
1) K&B making paper snowmen (since our many snows this week have never accumulated enough to make a real one out of snow):

1) K&B making paper snowmen (since our many snows this week have never accumulated enough to make a real one out of snow):

K playing with his science kit about colours - which he has been enjoying to no end this week!

Bowling Birthday Party
Today was K's bowling birthday party - a big success!
First they bowled:

Then they ate birthday cupcakes:

K opened presents and gave out the party favours, which were books for his friends. Another librarian mama read to the kids:

And then the alley turned on the black lights and music and the kids had an impromptu dance party!

Name Calling
K has had a strong case of the sillies lately, and one of its manifestations has been in creative silly name-calling. Below are a few of the things he called me during the course of today - try them out in phrases such as "You _____ _______!"
"Stumbling anchor" (personal favourite - it has sort of a drunken sailor sound, no?)
"Little poof chicken can"
"Pokey pecan" (this one was perhaps the most hilarious to K)
"One-ick toothpick" (not sure how this one should be spelled)
And, "You're a silvertongue politician, you are"

Blast from the Past
A couple of years ago, when K attended the UBC child care, we signed a permission slip for him to be observed and photographed by the Human Early Learning Project (HELP).
HELP is a neat program here at UBC that looks at determinants of early childhood health and learning, and is loosely affiliated with D's current research centre.
Every once in a while we see one of K's former classmates' photos in a brochure or report. Today I went to the web interface for the HELP Library, and what did I see?

He sure was a cute 2yo, huh? (That sweatshirt was new - and big - then; now it is old, short and stained!)

Halloween!
Getting the purple sparkly makeup...

The "singing pumpkin" (drawn by K) and the "Max Memorial pumpkin" (requested by K):

Our purple octopus!

K says, "I have three words for you: Trick. Or. Treat."
