10 Athletes That Died While Playing

November 20, 2008 · Filed in List All, Bizarre, Sports · 7 Comments

Death is something that most people fear, simply because we don’t know what happens after we die. Others aren’t afraid to die, but I think it’s safe to say that a lot of us get a bad feeling when we think about what comes next. While we may not know when or what is next, we do know that it is sure to come.

Most people want to die a peaceful death; usually while asleep. However, let’s look at a few athletes from the last few decades that have been active and awake before the time of their death. All of these men died doing what they loved. Maybe this is the way to go…who knows!

10. J.V. Cain

J.V. Cain was a tight end for the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1970s. He had been the tight end for six years and was racking up great statistics for the team. On July 22, 1979, Cain was taking part in the teams training camp in order to get ready for the new season. This day was also his 28th birthday. During camp, he was running a normal pass route and suddenly took a few steps backward, huddled over, and collapsed. Cain died from congenital heart failure. Though he didn’t die during the NFL Season, he still died doing something he loved.

The Top 10 Museums in London

November 18, 2008 · Filed in List All, Travel · Comment

London, England is full of museums. There are large museums and smaller museums. Many are quite good and some are ever-so-slightly crappy. If you only have time to visit ten of London’s many interesting museums, then below are the ten museums that Spoonfed would recommend. Even if you have time to visit as many as you like, we recommend you check out these ones first.

1. Victoria and Albert Museum

Probably one of the greatest museums in the world, the Victoria and Albert Museum is a perfect choice as the Spoonfed number one. The permanent collections are a tribute to some of the finest art and artifacts that civilization has produced. Books, art, glass, ceramics, fashion, furniture: it’s all here, housed in mid-19th Century splendor. With late openings, live music, and sumptuous temporary exhibitions, there’s really not a bad word to say. Viva le V&A!

Top 10 Useless College Degrees & Classes

November 16, 2008 · Filed in List All, Bizarre · 4 Comments

Some may argue that there’s no such thing as a useless degree – any education is good education. However, these seemingly pointless studies may be an exception to that rule. Pay attention as we list the top 10 most useless college degrees.

10. David Beckham studies – Staffordshire University, UK

It might sound like a joke, but the squeaky-voiced soccer star actually has a degree course dedicated to him. The course, which is technically classed as “Football Culture”, has been defended by its founder, who argues that degree courses must keep with the times. Celeb-style degrees can also be found in the US, with Madonna studies injected into the Gender course at Harvard (no less) and Oprah Winfrey studies at Illinois.

Top 10 Arguments That Can’t Be Won

November 13, 2008 · Filed in List All, History, Miscellaneous, Nature, Religion · 29 Comments

Since the time of fire, man has had arguments – rare or well done? Of course, arguments depend on your point of view, or in the case of husbands and wives, what the wife thinks. Some arguments are never-ending. Over the centuries, there have been some doozies that have kept philosophy students and teachers debating.

To be included on this list of Arguments That Can’t Be Won, the argument must have no clear answer that cannot be countered with another opposing view.

Disclaimer: TopTenz.net is in no way trying to lead you to think in one way or another. We are only trying to present the arguments in a meaningful context.

Evolution or Creation?

Theologists and scientists have been arguing this one for centuries as well. The argument goes back to the time when organized religion was almost as powerful as the monarchies ruling countries. When people starting postulating that the Earth was not the center of the universe, it gave way to the rise in questioning the idea of a seven-day creation and God’s role in creating the Earth. Enter Darwin and his Theory of Evolution and the debate truly kicks off with an unholy fevered pitch. Add in that there are many stories of creation across many different religions and your brain can really start to hurt.

Top 10 Black Sand Beaches

November 12, 2008 · Filed in List All, Nature, Travel · 5 Comments

When you think about going on vacation or to a getaway trip, you probably pick somewhere warm with inviting weather, people, and beaches. Once you pick that perfect beach you want to visit, you can’t picture anything else but a warm breeze and a clear blue sky that engulfs a beautiful brown sandy beach, with minimal rocks of course.

Think about this. Try picturing a beach with blue water, a crystal clear sky, and black sand. Sounds a little crazy huh? In any case, these beaches do exist. So, the next time you’re planning a vacation or looking for a new place to go to for a few days, try heading to a black sand beach. If you can’t pick just one or you aren’t sure of any, here is a list of the top 10 black sand beaches.

10. Vik Beach, Iceland

Vik Beach is located in a small village located in the southern part of Iceland. Though you may think Iceland isn’t the prettiest place on Earth to go to enjoy a beach, Vik Beach was nominated one of the most beautiful beaches on Earth in 1991. Vik is also the wettest village in Iceland, so you want to make sure that you get to the beach on a day that isn’t so rainy. Though this beach isn’t the best one to lie out and soak up some sun, it is definitely a marvel to see.

Top 10 Cradle Robbers

November 9, 2008 · Filed in List All, People · 2 Comments

I can think of lots of reasons why people may be interested in ‘robbing the cradle’. Perhaps the cradle robber is in denial about how old he or she really is. I know I often realize with a shock that I am over 30… imagine what it would be to be 60… or 80? Others might think that they look young and beautiful because they are standing next to someone who is young and beautiful; however, I would like to point out that if you want to make yourself look good it’s smarter to stand next to someone who is LESS good looking than you.

While the rich and famous get the most publicity, they are not the only ones cradle robbing. It might seem like it but that’s only because their relationships are more newsworthy than the average person. During my research for this article I found online communities and support groups for lots of every day people involved in this type of relationship. They describe the nature of their relationships as ‘age-gap’ rather than cradle robbing (sounds nicer). There are also less subtle groups, such as sugardaddybabes.com and dateamillionaire.com full of young ladies (and men) who are eager to date a cradle robber.

Do you know a cradle robber? Or perhaps you are one? Read the guidelines  and you can do the math yourself to see if you fit the guidelines.

A cradle robber is a person who taps people significantly younger than themselves. If X is the older person’s age then they are labeled a cradle robber if they date a person who is less than half of their age plus 7 years. But for this function to work, X must be greater than or equal to 18, as dictated by Urban Dictionary at http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=cradle%20robber

Example: Demi More was 42 when she married Ashton Kutcher (27) in 2005. 42 divided by 2, plus 7 is 28, but Ashton was 27 so that makes Demi a cradle robber (by the way, way to go, Demi!).

I struggled with placing the people on this list in order. It was hard to decided who was more of a cradle robber: is it someone who has been in more relationships or someone who really stretches that age gap? If you can make a good argument for why the order should be different, I’ll listen. Here is what I decided:

10. Demi Moore

Demi Moore & Ashton Kutcher

Demi Moore & Ashton Kutcher

When Demi Moore was busy being ‘Jules’ in St. Elmo’s fire (1985), Ashton Kutcher was 7 years old. He’s 16 years younger than her and they have been together for 5 years. Everyone knows about Demi and Ashton and, before that, Demi and Bruce. Here are two more relationships that land helped to land Demi Moore on our list:

  • Oliver Withcomb - Moore dated him in 2001. He’s a martial arts instructor and seven years younger than her.
  • Leonardo DiCaprio – They dated in 1998. He was 24 and she was 36.

I’m only giving her one cradle because the other two relationships were very short. Also, it seems like Kutcher and Moore are very happy and I think we’re all ready to leave them alone already.

Top 10 Celebrities Who Read Their Own Obituary

November 7, 2008 · Filed in List All, Bizarre, People · Comment

It is journalistic practice for rookies to start writing obits as their first assignments when first diving into the newspaper world. Sometimes these writers get ahead of themselves and some celebrities will find out that their obituaries have been written before their demise. And that means that a few of those people have the misfortune of actually seeing those obits printed before they have passed beyond the mortal realm.

To be included on this list, the celebrity or historical figure had to be of some significance, either famous or infamous and declared dead by in a major news media market such as a newspaper, on radio, on television or on the Internet. Imagine their surprise when they found out they were dead – talk about morbid curiosity!

10. Daniel Boone

Explorer of the American West and folk hero, Daniel Boone was made a folk hero because of the publication of his exploits in dime serials of the day. Kentucky’s “first” resident, Boone’s obit was erroneously printed a few years before he died at the age of 86 in 1820. Who knows, the newspaper who put his obit in early might have thought he was exploring really new territory – beyond the grave!?

10 Presidents Who Won with Less Than 50% of the Vote

November 4, 2008 · Filed in List All, People, Politics · Comment

A wise man once said, “popularity is overrated,” but when you are the president it certainly to gain the majority of the votes. Unfortunately for many of our previous presidents they stepped into our country’s most powerful role with less than half of our country’s support. Not a ringing endorsement and a heck of a way to start your term as president.

John Quincy Adams - 30.5% of the popular vote in 1824

This election is notable for being the only time since the passage of the Twelfth Amendment in which the presidential election was decided by the House of Representatives, as no candidate received a majority of the electoral vote. This presidential election was also the only one in which the candidate receiving the most electoral votes did not become president (because a majority, not just a plurality, is required to win). It is also often said to be the first election in which the president did not win the popular vote, although the popular vote was not measured nationwide. At that time, several states did not conduct a popular vote, allowing their state legislature to choose their electors.

Top 10 Least Important Presidential Elections

November 3, 2008 · Filed in List All, Politics · Comment

How do we decide which Presidential elections were the least important? We have to acknowledge that any election had some importance, because it chose the United States chief executive for four years. So we need to ask which elections match this statement: “For all the effect the election had on history, we could have skipped it.” Here are my choices, counting down to the most meaningless election in American history:

10. 1924 - Complacency Makes the Choice

The Democrats took 103 ballots at their convention to choose someone to oppose incumbent President Calvin Coolidge, who had succeeded Republican Warren G. Harding when Harding died in office in 1923. The factionalized Democratic Party could not even nominate a candidate capable of exploiting the scandal-ridden Harding Administration. Pre-depression prosperity reigned. The divided, contentious Democrats had no appeal to a complacent nation. The election was notable for one of the century’s strongest third party runs, by Progressive Robert LaFollette, who courted New Deal voter coalitions eight years before Franklin Roosevelt’s first victory.
