What has Cody been up to?

Music is still a part of my life - a large one. But nowadays I work full time, and between reading comics, books, games and activities I have no time to put into this. So I leave with one last link - and I suppose this was WaMW on its final, inarticulate post. But I think I better leave it this way.. after all, this was only for fun and I am glad to see it end the same way.

My grandfather is not doing well...

My updates may be lacking to my grandfather's condition, he hasn't very long to live now and I am trying to spend as much time with him and family as possible, my grandmother (and his wife of over fifty years) needs support now more than ever and it's a hard time for all of us. So I hope fewer updates make sense. Anyway, here's some old school indie rock for you to enjoy.

you can visit their webpage and buy their albums if you like them.

This last song is by The Robot Ate Me, who has a new CD expected out 6/06/06, this is off his previous album "Carousel Waltz". When I saw him perform it live he said it was about a relative of his that died to cancer, so I thought it might be fitting to link it. Very sweet and sad song, closes his album.

Danielson - so happy it hurts!

Danielson. He made pitchfork's best new music. Most who heard "Did I step On Your Trumpet" as their first warming up to the Danielson sounds were probably quite surprised when they heard the full LP. Yes, it was happy but it didn't lend insight into his his strange songwriting nature. Believe me; I was, in the beginning, hugely disappointed with the album. However, more listens revealed a tolerance/liking of his ADD hyper song structure. If you think Architecture in Helsinki changes up a lot wait until you hear this maniac. He's almost manic with the way the songs pound you from beginning to end. If you can get over that easily his voice will be the next stumbling block. It's a noise, not always musical in nature, but still suits him just fine for what he does.

However, this criticism that he's been getting has been glowing, and now, after forcing myself through this album for about the 5th time I am beginning to see why it's hailed as quite good. I can't explain it anymore than "exuberant" but the lyrics and the music are so joyful and celebratory that one has a hard time not liking it - see for yourself. It's quite interesting - I thought this would be one case where I wouldn't enjoy it at all, but I found out I was quite wrong. His Christian writing nature should take a backseat to the music he makes, so I won't touch on it. Such an issue is pointless, if God is a source of inspiration for a songwriter it shouldn't be a detriment to their work.

This song is just plain cool. Listen to the little details like the guitar imitating the second hand of a clock. The changes in this one make a lot more sense that some of his other songs.

!

As promised by moi, and update filled to the brim with... 1 mp3 link and... 3 bands discussed, two of which have been widely discussed before on other locations? Um... enjoy?

First, Jolie Holland is a musician (of course) from Texas, but she sings as though she has a heavy and quite foriegn-sounding accent. This can be both a point of enjoyment and one of annoyance depending from what I gather, soley based on my mood. "[Her] debut Escondida, which received much acclaim and earned her admiration from the likes of Tom Waits and Nick Cave."(CMG). So she cannot be all bad, can she? Anyway, below's a track from her latest release Springtime Can Kill You availible Here

Another group that caught me attention and every other blog on the planet's attention was Beirut. They're good not godly, I won't provide links, googling the band is enough in that respect.

You can buy Beirut here

In other news I finally built up the nerve to listen to Islands' Return to the Sea and it's very good. I daresay, however, I would have liked it more had I not heard any of the Unicorn's work. Still, the record is good enough to overcome that stigma and varied in sound and texture. Lovely album.

Seventeen days gone. Eeek.

I have not updated for 17 days. That's quite a long time. Especially with all the new music that's constantly cropping up. It's Three in the morning however and I must say I can't write on account of a splitting headache and sleepiness. I hope to have a summer job soon, but that's more personal life than musical blogging, isn't it? To distract until my next post here's some cool films I reccomend seeing over the summer:

-Squid and the Whale
-The Devil and Daniel Johnston (This I have not seen but am very excited for)
-A Very Long Engagement
-Howl's Moving Castle
-I <3 Huckabee's

Loads to talk about next update, wee. Expect some free songs too as an apology.

Looking into the Fiery Furnaces I discovered appaulingly wonderous news...

They will be playing the Desdemona Festival here in Cincinnati.

What is Desdemona you ask? Well, It's a big indie music fest this summer and will include such acts as...

The Fiery Furnaces
The Walkmen
The Stills
The Heartless Bastards
and everyone's favorite thing to say about festival events:
and more!

It should be apretty fun and a great event for conservative, boring Cincinnati. Nick Spencer, the guy who seems to be the indie brain of cinci has more to say about it at his blog which is found Here. Maybe I'll see people there. Wee.

Foma loves you, so they make music

I am back. My new room is in order and I not very comfy in it but that is aside from the point. First note of business: I have a little fun picture in the side bar about ad-free blogs. A cause I very much like to get behind with that one. Now, back to the music (where I belong)...

Browsing CD baby this morning I happened across a very cool band. Foma. Indie pop, Sci Fi concept album?! Foma's new album is called Phobos and it is a (oh no) concept album. The concept is a tad on the epic side but the cello really helps it sound important. I am writing on them a tad prematurely however because I have not heard the entirety of the album. CD Baby gives large samplers and gives a good idea though. I am very excited for this band. They're pop-ish indie-cello rock is pretty neat. I get a vibe of Cursive meets Grandaddy.

Describing their sound is hard but the concept behind the album is a pretty interesting one to say the least.

"The album chronicles the protagonist in his escape from a quickly deteriorating earth to one of the moons of mars, in hopes of beginning a new life. His journey is tangled with frustration in a commercial capitalist human culture, hopes of a better existence elsewhere, his own self doubt, and ultimately: failure on a number of levels."

Listen to the tracks offered on their webpage to get a glimpse of what I mean and please buy the CD if not for its great album art alone.
