Wax Essentials, A Thousand Rose Petals Candle Tin
By Lilly Loves | October 21, 2008
I love scented candles, they're great for creating a relaxing atmosphere in a room and they make a fantastic alternative to air fresheners.
The Wax Essentials range from Ashleigh & Burwood of London are great value candles that make perfect gifts. They're ideal for home fragrance and are available in 15 different fragrances. The candle I'm reviewing here is the "Thousand Rose Petals" candle tin and is available to buy from CandlesToYou for a very reasonable £4.99
The Wax Essentials Thousand Rose Petal candle tin has a subtle Rose petal sent that makes a great air freshener for any room but is ideal for smaller rooms like bedrooms. The candle is 100% Palm Oil Wax. Whilst there is some concern over the effect on tropical rain forests due to the rising demand of Palm Oil, Palm Wax does have environmentally friendly attributes.
- Palm Oil Trees are a natural renewable resource
- Palm Oil Trees have a higher yield and are more resilient than any other oilseed crop
- No artificial fertilizers or chemical treatments are required for the cultivation of Palm Oil Trees
Palm Oil wax is ideal for candles because,
- It's virtually drip free and soot free
- It's biodegradable and water soluble which means spills can be easily cleaned
- It can hold twice as much fragrance as Paraffin, Gel or Soy Wax
- It has a a longer burning time that traditional waxes
The burn time for this candle is approximately 15-30 hours and it comes in a presentation tin 6cm heigh with an 8cm diameter that has a clear perspex lid.
I think these make an ideal Christmas stocking gift for anyone so start stocking up for Christmas now.
Available from www.candlestoyou.co.uk priced at £4.99 as well as the complete range of fragrances.

Definsil Rescue Serum
By Lilly Loves | July 14, 2008
I came about this product whilst searching the internet for something to hydrate my itchy, sore, eczema inflamed hands after trying numerous products so far. This has been my best find yet. The two main ingredients are Cardiospermum halicacabum seed extract, otherwise known as Balloon Vine, and Echium oil cold pressed.
Referring to an article from the website from where this serum was purchased trials have shown that skin redness may be reduced by up to 35% within 15 minutes of application and skin sensitivity reduced by as much as 50%. The important claim of these extracts is their ability to calm the itching associated with such conditions and by doing so the itch/scratch cycle which so often results in weeping, bleeding skin and sometimes infection, is stopped thus allowing the skin time to heal and rebalance itself albeit with the use of conventional treatments until the area is improved.
As with any natural or conventional treatment results vary from person to person. There are several testimonials from sufferers to support the results of Cardiospermum halicacabum extract.
If nothing else Definsil is a great fragrance free hydrating serum for the skin without the greasiness of oitment preparations. It is best used on a regular basis even when the skin is healthy. During times of flare up it is likely that a type of steroid is required under the supervision of your GP or Dermatoligist until the skin is calmed.
Available at www.skinshop.co.uk in 50ml, 100ml and 150ml sizes.

Earthbound Organics Cream Cleanser
By Lilly Loves | May 10, 2008
This is a great cleansing balm for normal, dry, sensitive and mature skins. The minimal ingredients of Organic Sunflower oil, Rose water, Organic Camomile, Organic Calendula, Organic carrot and local beeswax have been a godsend to my excema prone skin which is easily irritated by certain essential oils and synthetic perfumes in regular products.
Calendula is well known for its anti-inflammatory and healing properties and is widely used externally for sunburn, excema and wounds slow to heal. Likewise Camomile, in particular German Camomile, soothes inflamed skin due to its primary active ingredient bisabolol which is also anti-irritant and anti-microbial. Rose water is well tolerated by all skin types.
For best use massage into dry skin and remove with damp cotton wool or a muslin cloth. I found it necessary to use a toner afterwards but not necessarily a moisturiser since this left my skin feeling adequately moisturised. If you prefer a "squeaky" clean feel, a rinseable cleanser or have very oily skin then this is not for you. Anyone with sensitive skin with or without excema or rosacea should carry out a patch test prior to use and is not recommended for anyone with a known allergy to flowers belonging to the daisy family Asteraceae.
Available from www.thenaturalshop.co.uk priced at £7.55 for 50g.

Neal’s Yard Remedies Rose Facial Oil
By Lilly Loves | December 5, 2007
After reading many good reviews of this product I decided to give it a try for myself. It is now perhaps my favourite product for 2007. Targeted at dry, sensitive skins I see no problem in using this for all skin types since it not only contains rose absolute oil but also geranium and patchouli. Whilst rose helps to calm redness associated with broken capillaries and irritation accompanied with itching and heat, geranium helps to regulate sebum production whilst containing anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties making it beneficial for oily and/or acne skins. Likewise patchouli also has anti-inflammatory properties but may also help to improve scarring or stretch marks. Interestingly it is used in anti ageing preparations and therefore may help lessen wrinkles. Combined with evening primrose, grapeseed and hazelnut oils this is a great all round product priced at a very reasonable £16 for 50ml.
To use massage a very small amount into skin that has been dampened with toner adding more if needed. My skin felt soft and looked balanced with a healthy glow.

Neal’s Yard Remedies White Tea Facial Mist
By Lilly Loves | October 3, 2007
This is another great product from Neal's Yard Remedies. Contains White Tea; a highly regarded antioxidant that can help prevent premature ageing, and possibly skin cancer, by scavenging free radicals from UV rays, environmental pollution, stress and poor diet. Taken from Science Daily, Elma Baron, MD, and Director of the Skin Study Center at the University Hospitals of Cleveland and Case Western Reserve University states:
"We found the application of white tea extract protects critical elements of the skin's immune system. Similar to the way oxidation causes a car to rust, oxidative stress of the skin causes a breakdown in cellular strength and function. The white tea extract protects against this stress. This study further demonstrates the importance of researching how plant products can actually protect the skin."
Along with Aloe Vera and the Bach Flower remedies of Impatiens and Crab Apple this is a light, refreshing and hydrating mist that is a must, if not only for the fabulous legendary blue bottle. Priced at £8 for 45ml the bottle may seem a little small in comparison to their other facial mists but compare this with other skincare products on the market containing White Tea and you will regard it a bargain!

L’Occitane Floral Toner with Honey and Floral Waters
By Lilly Loves | September 9, 2007
Part of the sensitive skin range this alcohol free toner is delicately scented with the soothing floral waters of lavender, lemon balm, orange blossom, rose and sweet clover. It also contains mineral rich spring water from the Alpes and, as it name suggests, softening organic honey. The refreshing spray distributes well and leaves the skin feeling calm and hydrated wthout any residue or "tackiness". This would be suitable for all skin types in particular sensitive and drier skins. I have experienced no problems on my combination skin. It is reasonably priced at £11 for 150ml and should you be unfortunate not to have a L'Occitane boutique near you it is available online at www.loccitane.com. Be warned postage and packaging is £4.95 and is only free on orders over £75!

Caudalie Beauty Elixir
By Lilly Loves | August 14, 2007
Promising a"burst of radiance to the complexion" this elixir really does just that. Made without parabens and petrochemicals this refreshing spray is fraganced with 100% natural aromas of grape, orange blossom, rose organic balm mint and rosemary.
It is a little pricey at around £25 and therefore I do not use this as a toner everyday, despite it being skin smoothing and pore tightening, but rather as an occasional finishing touch to my make up or as a skin pick me up on those less than perfect days. The spray distributes a fine, even mist and is therefore perfect for setting make up. The shelf life of the elixir is 15 months and is 115ml (although you may be able to buy a smaller handbag sized version) and not only is it a lovely product but comes in a gorgeous recycleable bottle. Madonna is said to be a fan.
