Lapu-Lapu City is celebrating its annual fiesta and thousands of devotees of the Virgin of the Rule(Birhen de Regla) from all over the Visayas are expected to flock tomorrow.
It has been said and believed by the devotees that they have spoken of the miraculous cures while the town itself was spared from a number of calamities through the intercession of the saint.
Today, Lapu-Lapu City is one of the major key cities that help boost the economy of the province of Cebu and in the Philippines as well.
Have you ever wondered what’s the the real name of Lapu- Lapu? Born in 1491, Cali Pulaco(some say it’s Kaliph Pulaka) also known as Lapu-Lapu was the earliest known indigenous Visayan chieftain, and datu of Mactan in the Philippines. Cali was a local title that is, as far as we know, no longer in use. It’s a royal title like that of a datu or a rajáh, but of a much lower rank. He was known as the first native of the archipelago to have resisted the colonization of the Spaniards and Roman Catholic prosytilizing.
On April 27, 1521, Cali Pulaco, and the men of Mactan, armed with spears and kampilan, faced Spanish soldiers led by Portuguese captain Ferdinand Magellan. In what would later be known as the Battle of Mactan, Magellan and several of his men were killed.
Lapu-Lapu died in 1542 and today and in his honor, the Cebuano people have erected a statue and church in Mactan Island and also renamed the town of Opon in Cebu to Lapu-Lapu City.
The weather is quiet cloudy and I was expecting to rain last Saturday afternoon. When I left home, the rain had just started to fall and my friends decided to visit Liloan’s lighthouse. I’ve heard this place a couple of times from my berks and to some fella photographers. As a matter of fact, this is one of the favorite shooting locations for most of them. And to note, Lilo-an’s lighthouse had won several grand prize entry to photography contests like Petron.
According to Wiki, Liloan’s Parola(lighthouse) is one of the best known landmarks in Lilo-an located at Bagacay Point. The original lighthouse was built in 1857 by the Spanish. However, the current tower was constructed in 1904 by order of William Howard Taft, the first Governor-General of the Philippines and later the President of the United States. The tower is 72 feet tall and remains in active use today.
Since everyone of us were first timers, we lost our way getting to the lighthouse. When we reached at the corner of municipal plaza, we asked one lady and she told us to go straight right after the bridge. We did so. We’re almost 10 minutes travelling far from the corner of the plaza and we haven’t found yet the landmark. We went back and ask another guy and this time he guided us going there. Thanks to this man as without him we might going to nowhere.
Well take note, the lady who instructed us how to get there was right but she also forgot to tell us that we will take a left turn when we reached or have seen the Amara signage perhaps 1 or 2 minutes away right after the bridge(there’s only 1 bridge). Amara is a private village near the lighthouse. You don’t need to get inside the village because the lighthouse is far straight at Amara’s entrance.
I didn’t noticed that the rain already stopped and the sun came out. It’s a breath taking experience also when it’s your first time, right? I really wanted to capture the lighthouse with drops of rain or that leaves of the trees falling from strong winds. I was assuming then it would give me a nice effect. But i think, my expectations were not meant to be and we ended taking photos of ourselves and the 72-feet tower. Upon reaching the landmark, we saw a group of photographers, lovers, friends and families having their picnic. Dusk is coming and it’s time to go home.
