Daft Punk is a French electronic music duo that rose to fame in the late 1990s.

Daft Punk: Pre-Daft Punk

In 1987, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo met at secondary school (Lycée Carnot in Paris) and formed a band with some pupils from the school. The group Darlin’ formed in 1992 and consisted of Laurent Brancowitz, Bangalter and Homem-Christo. Named after a Beach Boys song, the indie rock trio’s career was brief. The British music paper Melody Maker dubbed the band’s music “daft punk” and in doing so handed them the name for their next venture. When Darlin’ split, Brancowitz went on to form Phoenix.

Daft Punk: Homework and Beyond

Daft Punk’s career was launched when they met Stuart Macmillan (of Slam and Soma Quality Recordings) at a 1993 rave in the grounds of EuroDisney in Paris. They handed Macmillan a demo tape, which became the foundations of their debut single, ‘The New Wave’, released in 1994.

In 1995, they released ‘Da Funk’, which became their first commercial success. Looking for a manager, they settled upon Pedro Winter (Busy P), a promoter of Hype nightclubs.

Daft Punk’s first two singles were later featured on their debut album, Homework. A mix of electro, techno and house music, the album was considered to be an innovation in dance music. The single ‘Around The World’ was a huge success for the duo and renowned directors such as Michel Gondry, Spike Jonze and Roman Coppola were drafted in to direct their music videos. The videos were later released as D.A.F.T. - A Story About Dogs, Androids, Firemen and Tomatoes.

In 2001, Daft Punk released Discovery. A slicker, poppier album than their debut, the album reached number two in the UK and ‘One More Time’ was a massive nightclub success. ‘Digital Love’ and ‘Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger’ compounded the duo’s success and Daft Punk became one of the most popular dance acts of the time. A section of a 1997 performance in Birmingham was released as Alive 1997.

In 2003, Daft Punk branched out and produced the feature length animation 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem. They worked under the supervision of their hero, Leiji Matsumoto and also released an accompanying album to the film. Daft Club is a collection of remixes that were previously only available via online fan-club membership.

Human After All was released in 2005 and received mixed reviews. The next year, the CD / DVD anthology, Musique Vol. 1 1993-2005 was released, featuring new music videos. Human After All: Remixes was also released about this time and in May 2006, Daft Punk’s first directed film, Daft Punk’s Electroma saw its debut screening at the Cannes Film Festival. The duo appear in the film, though their music does not, and nor do their faces, as they went to great lengths to hide their identity, as they do onstage, in their iconic robot outfits.

Alive 2007 was released in November 2007 and featured Daft Punk’s performance in Paris that year. Pedro Winter stepped down as the band’s manager, choosing to focus instead on his own label, Ed Banger Records.

In February 2008, Daft Punk made an appearance at the 50th Grammy Awards, performing a reworking of ‘Stronger’ with Kanye West.

The Perfect Gift For John Travolta

manbra1.jpg

I have so many questions about these moob holders from Japan. They have obviously been watching “Seinfeld.” It’s The Bro!

First of all, the dude in the ad doesn’t even want to wear one. He’s covering his chesticles in fear. Second of all, this is a fetish thing, right? Third of all, these are basically just women’s bras put on manly mannequins. Fourth of all, I really, really love the Japanese.

This shit is almost better than The Manpon!

Have Paris and Benji Split?

Rumours spread about a break up…

Paris Hilton is said to have split from partner Benji Madden amid rumours that she has met someone else in London.

The starlet has been filming her latest television project ‘Paris Hilton’s British Best Friend’ in the UK and reports suggest that she may have found more than she bargained for.

Miss Hilton has declared her love for London on many occasions in the past and it looks like this time she’s ready to make a permanent move, telling friends that she is “much happier here”.

Good Charlotte singer Benji started dating the heiress earlier this year and until recently the pair seemed fairly content, not long ago Paris explained “I’m in a really great relationship right now and we’re really happy… He’s also like my best friend”.

Earlier this month Paris denied rumours of an engagement after she was spotted wearing an extravagant diamond ring “The wedding rumours are untrue. We’re still boyfriend and girlfriend, but not engaged”.

This could be the setting for somewhat of a royal affair with Paris recently inviting Prince William to the opening of her new nightclub in Las Vegas.

According to newspaper The Mirror, Hilton contacted William after swapping details at Mayfair’s Whiskey Mist recently.

Asking Your iPhone: Am I Drunk Yet?

November 19th, 2008 · No Comments · LIFE

drinking-app.jpg

Drunk calculator applications already exist for the iPhone, but this one is more in depth. And freer. Because it’s free. You can choose exactly what you’ve had to drink, and based on your weight, it determines how sloshed you are. Like right now it’s telling me I shouldn’t even be blogging. Fuck it though. Seriously, it doesn’t know shit. Bartender, another. If you do get too drunk, the application will even call you a cab or tell you to make out with the hottie next to you who looks feminine enough to warrant a kiss. Then, puke on yourself, lose your shoes, and pass out in a ditch and get frostbite. I mean, it’s the American way.

Hulger converts its retro phones for DJ use

November 12th, 2008 · No Comments · MUSIC, Retro

hulger.jpg

Ever noticed the DJs on the phone behind the decks? Well, you’ve probably guessed they’re not chatting to their mates - they are actually cueing up the next tune. And you can do the same.

Yes, retro handset specialist Hulger has introduced a DJ Adaptor that converts the plug on the Hulger phone to a headphone socket - meaning you can plug in the phone and do your best superstar DJ impression.

The Adaptor retails for 15 Euros, with a basic handset from Hulger (which you can use with your mobile) selling for 60 Euros. If you just want the DJ functionality, a cheaper option is probably the DJ-Phone, which you can pick up from Sivletto for around £25.

Boom Box/Mini Organ

November 11th, 2008 · No Comments · MUSIC, Retro

boomboxorgan.jpg

I think that most people will agree that the 80’s were the golden age of the boom box. Actually “silver age” would be more appropriate since the coolest and most collectible blasters are usually measured by how much chrome they’re clad with. Amplitude and clarity were the most important features, but there are a few portable systems that tried to leap ahead of the pack with a little something extra.

The Sharp MR-990 is one of the rarer examples of a feature-laden 80’s boom box. You’ve got AM & FM (no shortwave?), dual cassette, detachable stereo speakers, five-band EQ… but what’s in that little drawer in the middle? Pop open the little hatch, and out slides the Sharp Keyboard_out“Melody Computer” mini-organ. It has a couple different tones and rhythms, chord accompaniment - it looks like pretty typical Casio keyboard stuff, but the sound is coming out of your Sharp boom box.

There’s a little sequencer inside as well as a lot of other little buttons that appear to be for step entering your song, maybe even a little editing. You can also play the keyboard in real time, but the sharps and flats require an extra keypress - so don’t rely on this to replace your regular performing axe any time soon. The MR-990 is cool and very rare. I’ve linked to one that’s on auction right now, but be prepared to bring your wallet. There were only ever a few models of boom box with a built-in keyboard, and this is one of the rarest.

Set Your Wrist Ablaze! (Metaphorically)

November 11th, 2008 · No Comments · FASHION, Retro

tok1.jpg

Created from a fusion of plastics carefully wrapped around a solid, seamless sheet of highly polished stainless steel, Tokyoflash Fire features a new formation of multi-colored LEDs and is a lightweight design, built to last.
Each hole, with two LEDs beneath the surface represents one unit of time. Yellow LEDs indicate hours 1-12, red LEDs indicate groups of 10 minutes and green LEDs indicate single minutes 1-9.

So it’s a fairly easy to read model too. Go ahead — test yourself on the watch in the picture. Did you get it right? If so, pat yourself on the back. If not, put your helmet back on, your mommy’s probably worried about you. The Fire is available now for about $130 and makes the perfect Christmas gift for the person who has everything — particularly wrists.
